Australian tennis star Nick Kyrgios is set to make his return to competitive play after a six-month absence. Kyrgios will face off against his friend, Danish player Holger Rune, in the Energi Danmark Champions Battle at the Royal Arena in Copenhagen on May 24th. This exhibition match is expected to be the first time Kyrgios has played since October 2020. The Australian underwent knee surgery in January of this year after withdrawing from the Australian Open. Kyrgios and Rune have expressed admiration for each other in the past. Rune has stated that Kyrgios helped him with tactics and was very polite during their time together on the Futures circuit. This led to the development of a great friendship between the two players. Kyrgios recently stood up for Rune after the Dane had a controversial exchange at the net with Stan Wawrinka during their Indian Wells match. Kyrgios stated that Rune holds an incredible potential that could see him win multiple Grand Slams in the future. “Holger’s potential is incredible, and it is big enough to win several grand slams during his career. It could be big for the sport of tennis,” Kyrgios said when speaking to Danish newspaper B.T. Rune won the BMW Open in Munich last week, while Kyrgios is still recovering from his surgery. The exhibition match is expected to be a competitive event between two close friends who share a love of tennis. “Can't wait,” Nick Kyrgios wrote on Instagram, referring to his upcoming clash against Rune. Fans of both players will be eager to see them go head-to-head for the first time on the ATP tour. With Kyrgios back in action and Rune in top form, this exhibition match is sure to be an exciting event.
