The New York Mets couldn't catch a break on Wednesday night, losing 4-1 against the lowly Washington Nationals at Citi Field. This marks their fourth-straight loss and the first time in the 187-game tenure of manager Buck Showalter that the team has lost four consecutive contests. The Mets were riding high just five days ago, having won the first seven games of an eight-game road trip. However, they have since begun sliding down a muddy hill and seemingly can't stop. In two home games against the Nationals, the Mets have scored a grand total of one run. As usual, Mets fans are handling back-to-back losses to the rebuilding Nationals with grace and elegance. However, some fans are beginning to worry about the team's future prospects, particularly as they prepare to face the best team in their division, the Atlanta Braves, this weekend. The team's recent poor performance has also led to concerns about the lineup and the management, particularly after the Mets failed to make any significant changes during the off-season. Some fans are now questioning whether the team will be able to score as many runs as last year when five guys had career years. Despite the concerns among fans, some are pleading for patience and attempting to assure the fanbase that the losing streak is just a phase. They point out that there are still plenty of games to go and that both the Giants and Nationals are capable of beating major league teams on any given day. The Mets will have a chance to redeem themselves on Thursday night when they face off against the Nationals once more at Citi Field. The game begins at 6:10 p.m., and Joey Lucchesi will take to the mound for the Mets, countered by Trevor Williams for the Nationals. Lucchesi was the winning pitcher the last time the Mets experienced victory on April 21.
