The general role of the Sr. Aerial Construction Technician – Fiber Optics is stringing and maintaining fiber optic cable which includes pulling, tensioning, stranding, and spacing lines. This individual will troubleshoot, maintain, and repair overhead fiber lines. This position requires proficiency with new cable installs, pole transfers, strand building, lashing, make readies, and equipment mounting. This position provides leadership in the field and is able to perform and direct more complex assignments. The work performed will be within communications and power spaces.

This individual understands each product and manages the improvement of operational efficiency. They must be comfortable working at heights and in confined spaces for this position.

The Sr. Aerial Construction Technician reports to the Project Manager - Fiber Optics and will work primarily out of their assigned location.

Responsibilities

Safely perform work in communication and energized spaces

Inspect, mobilize, and operate a bucket truck from the cab

Record and report the sequential foot marks by the operator or groundman

Assist when needed to pull and hand off hardware

Responsible for framing poles

Pull cable, strand, fiber, and lash, for extended periods of time

Provide framing and attachment hardware for operator, jack down guys, pull lasher

Attend the reel to ensure uniform deployment of strand and fiber optic cable

Monitor basic gauges to determine tension and pressure on the cable lines

Monitor cable during installs for appropriate tension during critical turning points and transitions

Recognize general safety hazards and electrical-specific hazards such as missing and/or degraded parts and hardware

Identify the location of and direct the navigation of the crew into Energized Spaces

Participate in pre-construction surveys and ride-outs to inform project strategy

Read, interpret, and modify design packages

Responsible for completing time and material (T&M) documentation

Complete documentation to include record-keeping, billing, inventory, etc.

Complete daily close of business (COB) reports for customers

Responsible to communicate directly with customers

Responsible for leading multiple crews simultaneously

Ensure work is performed and projects are completed to engineering and design specifications

Provide training for climbers in tasks including body placement and equipment inspections

Oversee 3rd party optical ground wire (OPGW) installation

Perform minor field repairs on equipment (i.e., reel trailer, bucket and placer truck, and winder trailer)

Lead, mentor, and train field personnel

Provide feedback and input for employee performance reviews

Qualifications

5+ years of relevant Fiber Optics experience preferred

Mastery of Aerial Construction Technician II Job Duties

Valid Driver’s License is required

CDL A/B preferred

Proficient with the following equipment: ladders, bucket truck, man lift, cable puller, and reel stand

Small equipment experience (i.e., forklift, bobcat, telehandler, skid steer, etc.)

Flagger Certification required

Traffic Control Manager Certification preferred

Must be comfortable working at elevated heights and confined spaces

Ability to climb poles up to 40’ using standard safety protocols

Qualify as an Electrically Qualified Communication Lineman

Qualify in rigging (ex. Pole Framing)

Ability to work under minimal supervision

Ability to inspect, operate, and mobilize a bucket truck

Ability to apply technical expertise, evaluate problems and implement best practices

Possesses an aptitude for leadership in the field

Possesses a mechanical aptitude

Demonstrated ability for 3rd party oversight of optical ground wire (OPGW) installation

Possess strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to maintain professionalism

Able to read, interpret, and modify drawings to determine work placement and specifications

Compute basic math calculations and take measurements

Proficient with MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and Visio

Efficiently organize and plan work tasks to meet company goals

Critical thinking with exceptional problem-solving skills, able to work independently and in team environments

Proactive, resourceful, and highly motivated to succeed in a high output environment

Ability to balance multiple projects

Working Conditions

Walk / use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools or controls / reach with hands and arms / climb ladders and stairs / crawl / kneel

Climb poles; carry, set-up and extend ladders weighing up to 65 pounds, as well as work with confidence on ladders and utility poles at heights of up to 60 feet in the air to perform tasks in communications spaces

Work indoors, outdoors, and underground in various weather conditions

Able to walk long distances

Able to lift up to 65 pounds without assistance
