
Environmental Permitting Practitioner
Overview
Dillon’s Environmental Sciences technical group is looking for an Environmental Permitting Practitioner to join our multidisciplinary team of professionals in Western Canada. The position is to be based out of Alberta of Saskatchewan (offices in Calgary, Edmonton, or Saskatoon) with the potential for remote work. You will have the opportunity to work on a variety of exciting projects while providing clients with a fully integrated and superior customer experience. While this position is largely focused on clients and projects in the western provinces, it will also include the potential to work on projects across Canada.
We work with all levels of government, including Indigenous communities, industry and resource developers in the areas of environmental assessment, planning, and management. The successful candidate(s) will support our team with key tasks including: environmental permitting, approvals and compliance; leadership in environmental regulatory affairs interactions; contributing to environmental reports, plans, and monitoring programs. Responsibilities
Technical Development (87%)
Manage and coordinate multi-discipline environmental baseline studies, impact assessments, and related environmental permitting and approval assignments at the municipal, provincial, and federal levels
Lead and coordinate permitting and approvals acquisition activities at the local, provincial and federal level specific to utilities and renewable energy projects with a focus on Alberta and Saskatchewan regulations (eg. Alberta Utilities Commission approvals, Water Act, Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act, Public Lands Act, Species at Risk Act), including related information requests
Scope, plan, develop, and implement field programs
Coordination of multi-disciplinary projects
Provide oversight to project team members including biologists, agrologists, natural scientists, technologists and technical support staff
Support stakeholder and regulator engagement
Business travel upon request
Business Development (10%)
Prepare and support the preparation of project proposals and contribute to client relationships and business development activities
Liaise with public and private sector clients, government review and approval agencies, sub-consultants and community representatives
Undertake travel, as required
Learning & Development (3%)

Input to the career development of junior staff, including technical direction, training recommendations, coaching and mentoring
Contribute to Dillon’s corporate profile through active participation in professional associations and committees
Qualifications
An undergraduate degree in biology, ecology or a related environmental sciences
Proven professional work experience in environmental consulting, including project management and/or coordination
Experience in federal and/or provincial regulatory permitting, such as environmental assessments
A minimum of 5 years of demonstrated professional experience in environmental consulting, industrial, regulatory, or academic setting or related field with the specific emphasis on environmental assessment and permitting for development proposals
Membership or working towards membership with the Alberta Society of Professional Biologists, Alberta Institute of Agrology, College of Applied Biology, or BC Institute of Agrologists, other relevant professional governing body is an asset
Valid driver’s license (Class 5)
Excellent communication and report writing skills
Proficiency in English
Experience
Proven expertise and knowledge of local, provincial and federal environmental legislation, including associated regulations, policies, and guidelines
Experience in the preparation of regulatory applications and submissions resulting in the successful acquisition of permits and approvals
Knowledge of the natural environment and inventory methods, as well as application of Best Management Practices
Demonstrated ability to work in a team setting, on tight timelines, and according to established budgets
Demonstrated success in project management and client relationship skills
Experience interacting directly with a variety of clients to execute project delivery
Experience engaging and/or working with stakeholders and communities, including Indigenous communities
Proficiency in project proposal preparation and presentations
Strong oral and written communication, critical thinking, organizational and interpersonal skills
