Job Description

Overview


The 5G Digital Zone Manager works in partnership with Rogers 5G team to develop the 5G Digital Zone and once created will independently manage the day-to-day operations of the 5G Digital Zone while establishing and maintaining an inclusive, curious, and entrepreneurial culture. The Manager will provide technical guidance to students and will collaborate with stakeholders such as Rogers to secure the resources needed for student-led ideas and projects. The Manager will also provide early-stage entrepreneurship support for students seeking to commercialize their ideas. This position will work independently and with the Director, Velocity Campus, to plan and implement measures to improve the student experience within the 5G Digital Zone and is responsible for ensuring proper health and safety protocols are followed.


 


This is a 2 Year Contract position.


Responsibilities


Create the 5G Digital Zone



  • Collaborate with the Rogers 5G team to create and build out the 5G digital zones towards creating a 5G “campus of the future” whereby daily life for students on campus is demonstrably improved through applications that make use of the 5G campus network


Provide daily supervision and maintain a positive culture for the 5G Digital Zone



  • Arrange and assign space and resources within the 5G Digital Zone

  • Ensure that the 5G Digital Zone maintains a welcoming inclusive culture where students of any experience or program are welcome

  • Coordinate with a Rogers 5G architect on a regular basis and for monthly visits to the space

  • Purchase consumable items for student projects

  • Investigate, recommend, and implement new technologies and initiatives to improve the level of service to student users

  • Create and ensure safety measures are employed and followed by all students


Create, promote, and lead events in the 5G Digital Zone



  • Work with Velocity programs and marketing members to create 5G focused activities to draw new students to the space and maintain energy and excitement

  • Host events and information sessions within the space for student engagement

  • Encourage peer-to-peer support among student teams


Provide technical coaching for student projects



  • Build relationships with all student teams and provide them with technical support and resources to help them build out their ideas

  • Help student with rapid prototyping of their ideas

  • Meet with teams regularly to provide general technical guidance

  • Connect teams with external supports including professors, other campus innovation zones, Velocity advisors, and Velocity founders who can provide additional support and information

  • Instruct students on how to build prototypes using a product development mindset that utilizes customer feedback rather than a product feature mindset

  • Gather student needs for tools and hardware then work with the Velocity team to provide those items at the 5G Digital Zone


Provide early-stage business development support to student entrepreneurs



  • Identify and encourage students to explore commercialization of their ideas

  • Provide knowledge and experience in problem definition, customer discovery and validation

  • Instruct students on how to use customer discovery and validation to create a business plan

  • Connect interested students with Velocity support and advice


Act as facilitator and coordinator for Rogers 5G + student innovation activity across campus



  • Facilitate and coordinate between Rogers and student groups such as Faculty of Engineering (e.g. Ideas Clinic, MBET), and Stratford School (e.g. MDEI or GBDA)

  • Liaise with Velocity Campus team members to help execute 5G themed events that coordinate with the listed student innovation groups across the University

  • Track metrics and KPIs on student teams engaged in 5G activities on campus with support from the Velocity Campus team


Qualifications



  • Bachelor, but graduate degree preferred in engineering, computer science, or technical field that supports accountabilities in role

  • Two-three years previous tech startup experience or industry experience with demonstrable approaches to driving innovation with an entrepreneurial mindset

  • Must have skills and experience with rapid prototyping and bringing ideas for software and hardware projects to reality

  • Direct experience working with IoT and 5G systems is an asset

  • Early stage business development experience using customer conversations to inform a business plan

  • Must have skills in product ideation and scoping for minimum viable products that fit market need

  • Proven aptitude for attention to detail and the management of multiple demands

  • Demonstrated decision-making skills, including the ability to ask probing questions and anticipate student needs

  • Ability to exercise good judgement and discretion and work independently with minimal supervision within a fast-paced, multitasking environment

  • Excellent communication skills, oral and written

  • Solid organizational skills and leadership capabilities are necessary

  • Superior ability to build and manage interpersonal relationships with Technical and Administrative Staff, Faculty members, and students

  • Proven capability to make sound independent decisions related to the operation and maintenance of equipment

  • Strength in problem solving and driving continual improvement and positive change


Vaccination Requirement Statement
