Join UChicago Medicine, as a Physician Resource Nurse in our Heart Failure Program.


In this role, the Physician Resource Nurse oversees patients’ care and evaluates the appropriateness and outcome of care in conjunction with the patient care team. Supports and acts as a resource to the physician and health care team. Duties include, but are not limited to, : the managing the outpatient needs of the patient, in basket management such as FMLA paperwork, medication refills, and scheduling patients for testing. Must possess adequate knowledge of cardiovascular anatomy and physiology, medical terminology and cardiac rhythms to perform related cardiac procedures Strives to achieve positive patient care outcomes throughout the disease process by practicing according to the standards of care and procedures and policies provided by the University of Chicago Medical Center, and the State of Illinois.


Essential Job Functions

  • Plans, monitors and coordinates patient care using the plan of care or clinical pathway.

  • Coordinates care between inpatient and outpatient settings.

  • Collaborates with the patient, family, care team and multi-disciplinary team to assure appropriate, safe, cost-effective, timely and efficient care.

  • Identifies patient and family needs for consultation with other multidisciplinary specialists and assures needs are met.

  • Assures patient and family educational needs are met.

  • Evaluates the appropriateness of care in collaboration with the care team and the multi-disciplinary team.  Provides direction to others in achieving any necessary changes.

  • Participates in all Continuous Quality Improvement processes: assists in determining issues to be examined, participates in data collection and analysis.

  • Assumes responsibility for maintaining own competency and continuing education in area of specialization and in professional practice.

  • Performs other duties assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Associate Degree in Nursing; BSN degree or higher preferred.

    • Associate Degree Nurses are required to enroll in a BSN program within six (6) to nine (9) months of hire, and make progress toward and complete their BSN degree within 30 months. ADN nurses receive 100% tuition reimbursement towards a BSN degree from an accredited program.

  • Current licensure as a Registered Nurse from the State of Illinois

  • Current Basic Cardiac Life Support Resuscitation (BCLS) certification

  • Requires 2 years professional nursing experience in a cardiology setting required

  • Requires effective communication, organizational, and positive interpersonal skills

  • Critical thinking, sound and autonomous decision–making and problem-solving skills

  • Ability to multi-task and handle a high acuity, hectic-paced high patient load, work stressors with poise and calm demeanor.

  • Diplomacy, tactfulness, professional, and positive patient-oriented demeanor

  • Triaging/prioritizing and organizational skills

  • Work as cooperative and collaborative member of the patient care team

  • Peripheral blood drawing skills; IV insertion skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree preferred

  • Some outpatient patient management experience of heart failure patients.
