Job Description


The online medical writer/editor produces content for clinicians to attract ophthalmologists to the ONE Network (Ophthalmology News and Education Network) and engage them. This position is responsible for writing and arranging news content that helps physicians stay aware of the best standards in practice, latest surgical techniques, and novel diagnostic modalities so that clinicians can take optimal care of their patients.
This position requires excellent writing and editing skills and an ability to leverage multimedia to convey a message or teach a principle. The ideal candidate will help guide the acquisition and creation of online medical content that incorporates text with audio and video, although this is not a graphic design or production position. Successful candidates will be comfortable editing media files and generating visual elements for the news sections of the ONE Network. This position will also help develop and manage social media strategies for the ONE Network.
Responsibilities:

Write, edit, and assist in the weekly production of the Academy Express e-blast newsletter and its international editions, including writing 100-word journal article summaries and tag lines.
Write, edit, and post 300–500-word reviews of clinical articles published in journals, and use social media channels to promote.
Solicit, develop, edit, and post surgical videos, clinical interviews, and audio content.
Work with Managing Editor, another online medical writer, and a committee of volunteer physicians to identify and shape top content priorities. Keep in touch with the latest research through major ophthalmic journals, Annual Meeting symposia, and online resources.

Requirements:

Strong writing, editing, proofreading for AMA and other styles such as AP and CSE.
Strong background in healthcare, medicine, or science highly desired.
Understanding of journalistic principles.
Knowledge of content management systems and online publishing processes.
Setting and meeting rigorous deadlines while remaining sensitive to needs of volunteer authors.
Experience writing and producing for the web, preferably with rich media.
Video and image editing experience, including Final Cut Pro and Adobe Creative.
Demonstrated ability to interpret peer-reviewed clinical research publications/studies.
Basic understanding of new media, mobile apps, and social media.
Basic experience with web design and HTML, web editing, and/or content management systems.
Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
Adobe Acrobat Pro and Adobe Photoshop.
Search engine optimization: Crafting headlines and body content to surface relevant keywords and data.
Ability to transform and deliver complex clinical information, including multimedia, into clear, concise content that captivates a physician (ophthalmologist) audience.
Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
Exhibits tact and diplomacy when working with medical doctors.
Enterprising, eager to learn, looks for new ways to improve quality and add value.
Ability to work under deadline pressure with multiple projects and authors.
Ability to organize, prioritize own work, and work autonomously and in small team setting.
Strong customer service orientation—professional demeanor to represent the Academy.
BA in English, journalism, or related communications field preferred.
Travel to/from Annual Meeting, approximately 7-10 days/annually; other travel is possible, as required
