POSITION SUMMARY:< b> < p>

The Global Technical Development Head will lead and guide a team of multi disciplinary product development managers and category leads and oversees the development of new agricultural solutions in UPL's areas of core focus i.e. differentiated, sustainable and post patent solutions. They will ensure that products and agricultural solutions are developed and introduced to the market with accurate technical positioning and recommendations. They will make certain the company correctly understands and anticipates market demands by planning and developing products to meet grower pain points and that allows UPL to remain competitive in the marketplace. They will also actively develop a visible and positive internal and external presence within the company and the agricultural science community and ensures that the team is strongly aligned within the UPL organization. < p>

The incumbent will direct the organization's product development process, in alignment with the overall global company project management policies and will provide leadership in establishing proper scientific rigor and methodologies for efficient and accurate product development. They will be responsible for developing and providing the needed tools and processes to manage and interpret all R&D data globally within all product categories (including both chemical and biocontrol as well as bio nematicides and soil health initiatives). They will manage a global network of development specialists, and other stakeholders to provide technical expertise and implement strategies. As a member of the global R&D management team, they will be responsible for developing technical programs, working closely with regional development teams, the global category teams including global marketing and the technology leads from the New Ag Technology group, as well as looking for new testing opportunities internally and externally. UPL has recently established a new function within its growing R&D organization entitled, New Ag Technologies. The role of this function is to scout, identify, technically evaluate and, in partnership with other technical business functions, make a recommendation to partner with external entrepreneurs and innovators on new crop protection, plant stimulant, and stress protecting chemicals and biologicals which support sustainable agriculture. < p>

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES< b> < p>

Customer:< b> < p>

  • Directly leads the global technical category leads and development managers in the technical assessment of new Life Cycle Management opportunities, including due diligence activities.< li>
  • Ensures proper assessment of proposed value propositions vs. available information, identification of key data gaps, the impact of and comparison to the competitive products and technologies in the existing marketplace.< li>
  • Establish technical development strategy, field trial programs, and master protocols to assess new LCM opportunities, advance approved regional global New Ag Technology and LCM projects to commercialization, develop market data, and address product performance issues.< li>
  • Ensures that the global technical category strategy, global development efforts, and projects are accurately and efficiently aligned with the regional category teams.< li>
  • Remain current on emerging technology and agricultural market trends and grower "pain points" and educate the organization on emerging opportunities and unmet needs.< li>
  • Collaborates effectively with the New Ag Technologies R&D, Formulations, Regulatory, Global Marketing functional units and externally with universities, extension services, and governmental research services.< li>
  • Provides clear technical positioning of existing products and combined portfolio with the company. This includes integrated resistance strategy, rotational chemistry, and the future of the UPL product pipeline. Ensure that the category teams have clear technical direction within the organization for Global and Regional support.< li>
  • Ensure complete technology transfer at the time of product launch for globally managed products. Ensure that all the Category Teams have the necessary technical information to make sound business decisions.< li>

    Process Operation:< b> < p>

  • Ensures that global development programs (across all categories) are properly led and managed according to corporate project management principles and processes. While regions are not directly reporting to the incumbent, will provide leadership role for the technical development of agricultural solutions with the company.< li>
  • Ensures that all UPL internal resources are utilized to a maximum through proper communication and trial planning with the network of UPL's Agricultural Development and Research Stations. < li>
  • In accordance with company guidelines, develop and monitor development plans and budgets for projects across all categories, ensuring they are completed on time and within budgets.< li>
  • Ensure together with UPL's IP department that UPL's Intellectual Property is protected and supported, including, but not limited to, development of testing agreements, invention disclosures and support of patent filings and prosecution. < li>

    Individual Team:< b> < p>

  • Build, develop and motivate a team of multi disciplinary product development managers that operate according to "smart" R&D principles and are focused on delivering accurately and efficiently promising solutions and products to the market.< li>
  • Identifies opportunities to create synergies across BUs by sharing technical information and by identifying and communicating best practices and new opportunities across business units.< li>
  • Provides technical support and training where needed with specific focus on how to maximize the value in the portfolio. < li>

    REQUIRED EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:< b> < p>

    Education: < b> Master of Science or Ph.D. in Agronomy or Agriculture Sciences (or equivalent).< p>

    Experience:< b> < p>

  • 15+ years of combined professional experience in Product Development, Field Research, and Technical Project Management; Experience within a Marketing Sales area will be of added value.< li>
  • Technical expertise in new product ideation and product development of products with global scope.< li>
  • Strong understanding of the Agrochemical Industry and Crop Sciences.< li>
  • Proven success in team leadership and project management.< li>
  • Experience working on a regional global, cross functional team, demonstrated excellence in project management and field development, and cross cultural communication is essential.< li>
  • Experience working with global teams in a fast paced, high growth focused, dynamic and hands on work environment is strongly preferred. < li>
  • Experience in agricultural chemical product development, research, and or marketing is strongly preferred. < li>
  • Knowledge of high level statistics, experimental design, and data analysis and interpretation. Technical knowledge of agricultural markets and GAP validation for agricultural solutions.< li>
  • Experience with trial management software such as ARM is essential. < li>
