About this role

Under the direction of the Physician, Health Services Administrator (HSA), Program Manager (PM), or higher licensed medical professional, the Director of Nursing (DON) will be responsible for planning, developing, and directing the overall operation of the Nursing Department in compliance with all applicable nursing standards, local, state and federal regulations and laws.

What you bring to the table

Education for Director of Nursing:


• Graduation from an accredited school of nursing• BSN or Masters in Nursing is preferred


Experience for Director of Nursing:


• Minimum of three (3) years’ experience in health care management, five years preferred.• Three (3) years’ correctional experience


Licenses/Certifications for Director of Nursing:


• Unrestricted current RN license in state of practice - must maintain all certifications, educational requirements, licensing, etc. • Current (and must maintain) lifesaving ACLS certification through AHA• Current (and must maintain) lifesaving BLS certification through AHA

What you will do

  • Assists in the overall responsibility for coordinating the health care services for county’s detention facilities and carries out the terms of the county contract

  • Assists in the recruitment, hiring, training, and supervision of all nursing personnel

  • Perform employee evaluations and make recommendations for employee promotion/discipline

  • Completes all staff scheduling

  • Assists with nursing sick-call when necessary

  • Communicates to physicians/providers any potentially significant medical complaint or observation discovered during routine duties

  • Collaborates with Medical Director on clinical issues and policy changes

  • Assists the on-site medical director and HSA/AHSA in the credentialing process for RN's working under standardized procedures

  • Assists with clinical and administrative matters

  • Assists the HSA with establishing and maintaining company Policy and Procedure Manual

  • Management and control of Methadone as assigned

  • Maintains employee personnel files and monitor compliance with corporate database informational requirements

  • Recommends and participates in the development of organizational policies, such as monitoring and enforcing Infection Control policies and procedures

  • Serves on organizational committees such as QA, Infection Control, and MAC meetings

  • Conducts regular staff meetings and in-services

  • Assists with the collection of monthly statistical data

  • Conducts Quality Management audits as outlined in company policies

  • Chart all findings in persons served medical record providing written summaries of history, diagnosis and treatment course or other documentation requirements as outlined by company and Facility

  • Assist in the job shadow portion of the interview process of potential staff

  • Assist in orientation and training of new employees

  • Responsible for the performance evaluations and successful training of direct reports

  • Perform other duties as assigned.
