Axle is seeking a highly ambitious, adaptable, structured, and detail-oriented Computer Scientist to join our vibrant team at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) 


Overall Position Summary and Objectives The primary objective is to provide services and deliverables through performance of support services in computer science. The contractor will:

  • Provide expert research services in computing, artificial intelligence, statistics, and programming as relevant to IAA research efforts

  • Support all technical efforts of the section as relate to the SSA IAA

  •  Deliverables:

    • Work products and documents related to solving complex problems relevant to research conducted by NIH-RMD to support the IAA with the SSA - Quarterly

    • Work products and documents related to ensuring that statistical and mathematical notations allow comprehension by other researchers; ensure that statistical and programming code are sufficiently annotated to allow comprehension and reproducibility by other researchers - Quarterly

    • Work products and documents related to conducting literature reviews of analytic methods that have been applied across a broad range of scientific fields - Ad-Hoc

    • Work products and documents related to disseminating research and methods to scientific journals and venues - Ad-Hoc

    • Work products and documents related to participating in meetings with staff to advance study progress - Monthly

    • Meet with lab members to present updates - Weekly

    Work Details:

    • Designs and implements software and hardware systems to support scientific research.

    • Establish functional requirements through discussion with investigators and observations of their methods and investigates software architectures and development of methods to improve software reusability and portability.

    • Evaluates experiment and testing strategies and identify new approaches, methods, and systems.

    • Research existing and new technologies used in medicine and scientific research to evaluate how it might be optimized and expounded upon through better technology and applications.

    • Collaborate with teams of engineers and scientists in completing phases of projects by developing subsystems or components, which are part of those projects.

    • Investigate the suitability of specific methods, algorithms, and software approaches to clinical experiments and testing.

    • Monitors and evaluates computer information systems and application performance.

    • Troubleshoot problems involving technical issues related to design, development, and administration of critical applications.

    • Work with team members to review output, identify, and resolve problems of intent, inaccuracy, or feasibility of computer processing.

    • Work with team members to optimize computational efficiency of programs and develop solutions that are compatible with SSA computing systems and processes.

    • Provides subject matter expertise to senior scientists and program executives.

    • Maintain deep understanding of computer science theories and the latest trends and developments in computational and information sciences.

    • Consult with diverse, cross-functional stakeholder groups to identify opportunities, develop problem statements and understand context to inform research strategies.

    • Provide input into software and hardware investment planning based on deep understanding of clinical necessities.

    • Search scientific literature to select and modify computational methods and procedures.

    • Collaborate with professional and academic societies, associations and organizations to identify new approaches to computer science and prepare recommendations for adoption.

    • Maintain deep current understanding of computational issues and approaches related to natural language processing, health informatics, and linguistic analyses of electronic health records with a special emphasis on the conceptualization, categorization, and use of information on human functioning. 5

    • Maintain deep and current understanding of the conceptualization, classification, and measurement of disability and functioning.

    • Contribute to research projects, including conceptualization, literature reviews and synthesis, methodological approaches, data analysis, study implementation and monitoring, as well a scientific reporting. 2

    • Prepare briefing documents; gather, organize and summarize selected information.

    • Substantively contribute to peer-reviewed publications and presentations for scientific venues, which will require domestic and foreign travel. 4

    • Maintain all study related records and documents in a complete, orderly manner and in accordance with scientific records management requirements.

    • Develops advanced approaches to artificial intelligence and machine learning to support scientific research.

    • Develop advanced machine learning algorithms to support scientific research and medical research and business process improvement. 1

    • Design, build and deploy data ingest and transformation infrastructures using deep learning neural networks.

    • Establish scalable, efficient, automated processes for large scale data analyses, model development, model validation and model implementation.

    • Research and implement novel machine learning and statistical approaches.

    • Solve complex statistical, mathematical, and computational problems relevant to health informatics research. 3

    Minimum Education




    Additional Qualifications:


    Certifications & Licenses

    • Minimum of 5 scientific manuscript publications

    • 4+ years of experience post-Master's degree

    • MS in Computer Science
