Job Summary / Purpose
Perform a variety of chemical, microscopic, and bacteriologic procedures of a moderately and highly complex nature, following established standards and practices to obtain data for use in diagnosis and treatment of disease. Provide direct care to patients of all ages.
Essential Key Job Responsibilities
Consistently produces accurate results on patient, Q.C., and proficiency samples following established protocols. Displays effective problem-solving skills, recognizes deviation from expected results, and demonstrates knowledge of trouble-shooting skills/instrumentation/methodology. Demonstrates the ability to interact with laboratory information system (LIS and/or hospital information system (HIS) computer functions as it relates to the testing and reporting area. Effectively troubleshoots and resolves instrument malfunctions to assure the real-time availability of equipment.
Recognizes factors affecting results including differences in sex, age and species and follows the established guidelines and protocols for test reporting that includes: proper handling of critical values, proper reporting of STAT values, recognition and resolution of problem scenarios in a professional manner, and reviewing departmental logs for completeness of testing requests. Performs, evaluates, recognizes and acts upon data following established protocols for corrective action and documentation when QC data falls outside acceptable criteria.
Functions within job description. Follows approved policies and procedures by demonstrating a knowledge and understanding of established testing procedures and protocol by remaining abreast of Coagulation, Serology, Transfusion Medicine, Microbiology and Age Specific Competencies by participating in in-house training and education programs (i.e. new instrumentation, educational programs), performance of proficiency challenges and attending hospital mandatory education on a yearly basis.
Follows established chain of communication by listening carefully, communicating in a clear, specific professional manner. Demonstrates ability to communicate with physicians, patients/patient families, and coworkers effectively. Maintains positive behavior. Routinely discusses work flow issues with coworkers and keeps appropriate staff informed of problems and/or opportunities for improvement by giving clear and concise directions to support personnel. Maintains appropriate confidentiality at all times.
Participates in evaluation and development of new procedures and methods. Actively participates in staff education by assisting in the training and competency checklist completion for all employees and students. Acts on opportunities to improve by participating in inter-and intradepartmental committees and assisting with gathering and reporting of statistical data in a systematic and meaningful manner.
Consistently follows Safety policies and procedures relevant to all assigned duties, including, but not limited to OSHA Health and Safety regulations and Universal Precautions to maintain a safe environment for self, coworkers and patients. Demonstrates knowledge of role in fire drills, disaster drills, codes by participating and ensuring that all documents are signed and accurately completed following practice drills. Documents incidents according to hospital policy.
Demonstrates broad knowledge of laboratory departments. Assumes the responsibilities and makes decisions as needed in the absence of the laboratory leader. Supervises testing personnel in the daily performance of their duties and ensures that all work performed by testing personnel is reviewed within 24 hours of testing. Is accessible to testing personnel at all times (while onsite) as back-up to the laboratory leader.
Evaluates and implements new/updated test methodologies. Assists in resolving technical problems. Performs and/or assists with routine and special tests when required. Evaluates competency of and assures training of employees and students. Assists with annual performance evaluations.

Qualifications
Required Education
Associate's Degree in Laboratory Sciences/Medical Technology or equivalent education
Required Licensure and Certifications
MLT(ASCP), CLT(NCA) or equivalent certification.
Required Minimum Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Adequate conversational English is required in order that the individual be able to take direction from management, understand how to complete job tasks, communicate adequately with patients and co-workers as necessary, understand and follow safety guidelines, and understand the Associate Handbook and all hospital policies.
