
Senior Commercial & Marketing Counsel
Discord is looking for an exceptional Senior Counsel, Commercial & Marketing to join our growing legal team. This is a high-impact role at one of the most interesting companies on the planet!
As a Senior Counsel, you'll be an agile, problem-solving commercial generalist who also has a good sense of marketing laws. You will draft and negotiate agreements to support various functions across the company, including marketing, procurement, and business development. You will provide strategic and sound legal advice on partnerships, marketing initiatives, technology integrations, and IP licensing. In this role, you'll get to work closely with some super inspiring people, including our Privacy, Policy, Business Development, Finance, Marketing, and Product teams.
Reporting to our Managing Counsel, you’ll be capable of handling complex matters independently and also have ideas for how the company can work smarter, more collaboratively, and more efficiently. Drawing on past experience, you will know how to move forward complex projects with multiple cross-functional stakeholders. What You’ll Do:
Structure and help negotiate business development deals with partners
Review marketing programs and initiatives and advise on best practices
Issue spot and provide practical advice to help the business make informed decisions about risk
Develop standard forms, fallbacks, and processes that allow for scale and optionality
Develop new policies and programs as we expand our operations across the US and into Europe and other regions
Develop training and mentor others on legal issues, contracting, and risk management.
Manage outside counsel resources
What You Should Have:
JD from an accredited law school
Admission to the California Bar or eligible to register as in-house counsel with the California Bar
8+ years combined experience at a well-respected law firm or in-house legal department
Significant experience drafting and negotiating complex deals and working with cross functional stakeholders, including product, privacy, and finance.
Foundation in technology transactions with a willingness to get creative on deal terms when that's necessary to improve our business goals
Familiarity with US and international privacy principles
Experience in advising marketing teams and reviewing marketing materials
Open mind and curiosity to navigate new challenges and pivot to new product areas as needed.
Ability to work collaboratively, independently, and strategically with clients of varying degrees of deal experience.
Excellent organizational skills and the ability to manage several simultaneous projects under deadline pressure

Bonus Points:
In-house legal department experience with a consumer-oriented tech company.
Expertise in legal and regulatory aspects of marketing, especially on social media.
Experience in licensing music for live performances or digital platforms.
Appreciation for absurd and improbable hypotheticals
