BEHAVIORAL HEALTH ASSOCIATE, NURSING

Overview

Under the direction of a Registered Nurse (RN) and/or Physician, and in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team, performs crisis and/or de-escalation interventions, therapeutic observations, engagements, client supervision and other behavioral health related duties, including assisting in the implementation of restraints for clients presented to Behavioral Health Services for psychological assessment and treatment. Acts in compliance with corporate, hospital and all relevant regulatory policies.

Responsibilities

Standards Compliance:

Engages, interacts and assists with working with patients in a therapeutic milieu and with a clinical team approach (with an emphasis on patients identified as high risk).

Welcomes patients to the service (Psych Emergency Department, Medical Emergency Department or In-patient) and reviews safety rules with patients.

Clinical Practice/Patient Care:

Helps identify high risk patients and uses Crisis Intervention practices and personal support safety plan intervention techniques to maintain a safe environment.

Understands patient characteristics, triggers, trauma informed and patient/environmental variables in order to assist in preventing patients from losing control.

Fosters positive role model for patients, families, visitors, and staff.

Participates in shift hand-off meetings, unit rounds, community meetings, team meetings, and committee meeting as required.

Assures safety of patients, visitors and staff through property/ patient safety search prior to entry to patient care areas as directed and under the supervision of RN.

Performs same sex “ pat-down” during patient safety search in a respectful manner as indicated and according to IMC guideline.

Assures safety of the patient and environment by completing Patient/Property safety search which includes use of hand held metal detector.

Assures the patient’s and visitor’s property is safely held and returned as soon as appropriate.

Participates in debriefing after codes, incidents use of Restraints, or when needed and completes tracking and review forms.

Assists in the assessment of need for as well as the application and removal of restraints.

Management:

Member of the BEST Team and Team Orange Response Team.

May be assigned to be a member of the BEST Team.

Leads or co-leads discussion groups on topics such as anger and safety.

Reviews charts and incident reports as needed to identify possible preventable factors and present these to the treatment team.

Participates in group supervision and case conferences.

Performs observations and monitoring of assigned patients and conducts every 15 & 30 minute checks and hourly rounds as hallway monitors as assigned. Reports observations, interactions and client activity to assigned nursing staff timely.

Communicates clinical matters to assigned RN or other professional staff timely.

Escorts patients dung transfer, for testing or for admission on or off facility premises as required.

Operational Performance:

Demonstrates knowledge of emergency procedures, fire safety, evacuation procedures, and internal/external disaster plan and procedures.

Participates in quality assurance/performance improvement activities and departmental and/or facility-wide training as required.

Interactive Relationships:

Performs related work to ensure the safe operation of the unit.

Model correct ways to prevent and de-escalate crisis situations.

Work with unit-based team to prevent and de-escalate crises to ensure a safe environment.

Qualifications

Education:

An Associate’s degree in criminal justice, social services or a health related area.

Or, a High School diploma or a G.E.D. and two years of full-time experience in law enforcement, nursing or Psychiatric/Behavioral Health in a high volume, intensive care environment.

Or, a satisfactory equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

However, all candidates must possess a minimum of a High School diploma or G.E.D.

Successful completion of an appropriate training program in the application and use of restraints must be completed prior to an individual performing such work.

Knowledge and Skills:

Ability to effectively communicate (verbal, written) in the English.

Special Note:

As required by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), Hospital Conditions for Participation-Patient Rights (42 CFR Part 484), before applying restraints, implementing seclusion, performing associated monitoring of the restrained or secluded individual, or providing care for such individual, staff must be trained and able to demonstrate competency in the performance of these actions.

Physical Requirements:

Involves standing, walking, sitting, talking, hearing and bending.

May include some repetitive motions.
