Development Engineer

Overview

The incumbent will act as a leader and an SME (subject matter expert) in regard to glass processing, with a solid understanding of its importance to Vitro’s concurrent engineering practice and its implementation on all glazing systems as awarded to Vitro.

This position has primary responsibility to ensure successful match between product development and Vitro process capability from a glass processing perspective.

This includes:• meeting project timelines, tooling recommendations, manufacturability, cost targets (definition and delivery), and quality to satisfy the needs of both Vitro and the OEM customer• understanding Product Engineering and Design (Basic) including customer specifications and standards • having a full understanding of each process within the entire value chain for glass bending, lamination and value add processes

Strategy – Participating with the local leadership in planning and implementing strategic initiatives to ensure long-term viability of the local and regional corporate entities.

Quality – Identifying and eliminating problems before and as they occur using the corporate values of Lean, Six Sigma, Fairness, Customer Concern and Rapid Response. Actively participating in troubleshooting activities, root cause analysis and corrective actions related to customer complaints.

Global:

This position is based in Elkin, NC, as part of the technical center’s community (Rochester, Ettlingen) and will represent the Vitro Concurrent Engineering team on all pre-award and post-award activity related to the facility.

This position is responsible for on-time delivery of assigned projects, meeting technical requirements for manufacturability at a level of quality that is acceptable to both Vitro and external customers, and supporting all assigned activities as defined in the OEM Product Development & Launch Process and the systems described within that process.

Local:

This position provides process and project engineering and technical resources management to optimize the production facilities operation to meet the plant’s objectives in the areas of safety, quality, and cost and to assure future growth by planning for and implementing process improvements. The incumbent is responsible for product and process research & development, quoting new business and managing the capital plan related to assigned development areas

Responsibilities

Global:

1. Coordinate the team and external employees on an ongoing basis to make sure the processes and procedures are kept and support where needed to endure proper launches in the given restrictions 2. Distribute workload between the engineers and assign work packages to individuals3. Serve as the main interface for process and technology related topics 4. Release pre-award process feasibility assessment, process capability requirements, QFD 5. Lead the improvement of development runs to meet process capability for active program launches6. Solve process capability issues and close capability gaps - Liaison back to Advanced Process Engineering when additional expertise needed - Establish a database of design for manufacturing criteria to be utilized by Vitro and the OEM design staff to define class ‘A’ surfaces7. Drive the Improvement process 8. On time delivery and high quality of all process engineering support activities to ensure successful gate review/approval for supported programs

Local:

1. Manufacturing – meet the budgeted speed and yield parameters; achieve fixed targets for the area (OEE, Planning, Process Documentation, Scrap Level). Coordinate improvement projects identified to support agreed targets2. Lead improvements in product quality and features, and process efficiency through the management of Engineering and Process Technical staff. Liaise with the Central Process Engineering teams in the USA, Mexico and Germany to ensure best practice sharing and development plans; Support Kaizen program3. Environment, Health and Safety – Contribute to a safe, healthy and environmentally sound workplace which promotes the continued well-being of employees, equipment, facility and community; Ensure that all new machines and equipment modification meet legal and safety standards 4. Financial Control – Develop, implement, and control spending for both Capital and R&D Expense budgets to ensure expected plant efficiencies and financial returns; Act as the local resource for providing new product quotes5. Human Resources – Provide training and guidance to Engineers and other employees impacted by process change to ensure high quality personnel performance and development

Qualifications

Bachelors Degree in Engineering

3 plus years’ experience in a manufacturing engineering (with medium to complex engineered products/assemblies) or related position within an automotive manufacturing operation

Must possess excellent communication skills and be able to interface at all levels of management (both written and verbal) as well as interpersonal skills of team participation, influencing others, negotiation skills, conflict resolution and problem-solving skills to optimize product designs against other functions and constraints. Other critical skills include technical presentation skills, safety-orientation, customer service focus (internal and external) and being results-oriented. Can work well under pressure, understands the importance of time management and meeting deadlines, and is a team player. The incumbent must be proficient in software and systems like: Microsoft office suite of products: EXCEL, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook and Project as well as have a strong understanding of APQP/TS systemsKnowledge of Total Process Maintenance (TPM) standards and processes Quality systems including Lean/Six Sigma
